Types of Firewalls for Computer Networks

A firewall is a network security tool that protects the server's network traffic. It monitors and filters all incoming and outgoing traffic. A firewall uses a set rules to decide whether to allow or block certain network traffic. Firewalls are used to prevent unauthorised use from reaching the servers. Firewalls may be software- or hardware-based.

Firewall policies

A firewall is used to protect private networks or individual computers. It filters outgoing and incoming traffic using a set of pre-defined rules called firewall policies.

Different types of Firewall

Packet Filters (Stateless firewall)

If a packet matches the rules of the packet filter, then it will be dropped or accepted by the packet filters.

Firewall filters that are stateful

This filter is also known by the name network firewall. It keeps track of all connections that pass through it. It can tell if a packet is a start of a new or part of an existing connection, or an invalid packet.

Application firewall

For HTTP applications, a web application firewall is used. To monitor and block HTTP network traffic, there are a number of rules. These rules can be used to block SQL injections and cross-site scripting (XSS).

Firewall Packet Filter

Based on packet filter firewall information, a packet filter firewall can forward and block packets. It uses the packet layer and transport layer headers source IP addresses, destination IP addresses, source port addresses, and type protocol (TCP or UDP) to determine which packets are being blocked.

A packet filter firewall uses a filtering table that determines which packet should be forwarded or discarded. It filters at the transport layer or network.

Proxy-Based Firewall

Proxy-based firewalls act as intermediaries between end-users and source servers to provide the requested data. Based on its policies and rules, the proxy filters all network traffic and blocks or allows traffic.

A proxy can inspect the entire network packet, in addition to the port number and network address. This firewall is considered the most secure because it blocks direct network contact between systems.
